Life Is Crazy Fast!!

First let's begin by saying I am a day late. Second let's all think of the babies that we have loved with our hearts so fully that the loss of them is felt for a lifetime. This is Lady Belle, Dump Dog, who we rescued from a backroad dumping site in November of 1997. If you would like to read her whole story go to www.allaboutthedogs.net/Lady.html. She was a fantastic girl who scared herself the first time she ever bellowed. She was with us almost 5 years when she left this world on September 23, 2002. She is still missed greatly. We will be driving up our long driveway and if a rabbit runs out we always tease one another that if we could only see her, that we are sure Lady is right at it's heels.

This is the next girl we get to talk about who would have been 13 years old yesterday. She was my first Cardigan Welsh Corgi and hopefully not my last. I will have to say though I think she spoiled me because her temperament was so docile. She came to live with us after she had earned her title and was known in the ring as Ch.Sisterwood Platinum Lady Blu. Her call name was Patty, her other family called her Patty Sue as we did at first. We eventually called her Patti Cake! She was one of the sweetest girls that EVER lived. We miss her so much. She left a whole in our lives and our hearts when she left. Thank you to all the people who made it possible for her to be in our lives (Sarah Keth, Laura Marrocco, Marla Gardner, and lastly Ellen Ikerd). Her beautiful soul and haunting eyes were just a small part of her!

Thank you for reading my rattle about two of the most wonderful dogs I have ever known! Hug your furries a little tighter today and gave them an extra treat!

Missy's Sissy Que - Shetland Sheepdog

Today would have been her birthday! She has been gone from us for 6 years now and is missed so strongly at times. She lived a long happy life of over 16 and a half years. She was my first registered dog, but papers didn't really matter. She had my heart from the moment I first laid my eyes on her. She was born on Labor Day morning in our living room. I saw her before her mother had even removed her sac from around her. She was taken from us by Mammory Cancer, but will never leave our hearts!!

New Year on it's Way!

With the New Year on it's way I am feeling the need to reflect like a lot of people seem to do....

This year has shown me what true friendship can withstand. Life seems to take us through peoples lives and into others for longer periods of time. Friends can be people who are near or far, people who are seen or talked to daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. Whatever type of friend you may be I would like to thank you for thinking of me as your friend.

I have learned that believing in yourself goes a long way. I started trying to forward my photography and sure enough things began to happen. I hope that in the New Year I can continue to do what I enjoy. I would like to thank those of you who believed in me when I was not so sure of myself.

Lastly a tribute to some of the people and pets that have been lost this year. I will not put any names to you, but most of you know who they were. I will forever miss some of you because of your special place in my life. I will always remember your warmth and your wonderful spirit long after you are gone.

May your New Year be blessed with the many joys that come so unexpectedly in this life along with the ones we ourselves create for others.

Tribute to Skunk - Puppymill Rescue

A tribute to a Chihuahua named Skunk....

In April 2006, NAFA (Northeast Arkansans for Animals) assisted with the closure of a Chihuahua puppymill in Southeastern Missouri. At the conclusion, NAFA took the 27 worst Chihuahua of various shapes and sizes. Perhaps the poster pup for this rescue was a black and white female Chihuahua apply named Skunk. She was nearly toothless (only 3 rotting teeth remained in her mouth). NAFA investigators were told that most of her teeth had been pulled because she was a biter. As a result her tongue constantly hung from the side of her mouth. Three of her four legs had been broken at some time and never set, so she walked with an incredible hobble. She had also had damage to one of her eyes that had never received veterinary care so she had limited sight in her left eye. Perhaps the most daunting of her many qualities was a heart condition that required expensive medication. It is also no surprise that she trusted no one and for nearly a year wanted no one to touch her.

NAFA volunteers tried several foster homes but none seemed to suit her and the expensive drugs that she required limited her adoption. Finally, the decision was made that she would live at the NAFA office to oversee the parade of geriatric and disabled dogs that NAFA rescued. And, she did her job very well. Somehow she taught them to trust and allow people to handle them. Several of those whom she mentored were a dachshund named Moses, a pom named Flower, and another chihuahua named Stitch just to name a few. Over the past several months, Skunk's many maladies began to worsen. A chiweenie named Nimaway took over Skunk's job and began to care for Skunk. Glaucoma finally took the last of Skunk's sight, but Nimaway became her eyes. Although Skunk could still get around some, Nimaway would make sure she had treats in her bed and was often seen cleaning and grooming Skunk.

Early Sunday morning (October 24th) Skunk passed away. She will always be remembered as the true spirit of NAFA. We promised that the horrors of her past would be replaced with love and each of us at NAFA loved and cherished each day we had with her.

Skunk was recently part of a "Trash the Dress" photo session with one of NAFA's long time volunteers, Janae McCallister. I don't think she ever looked more beautiful than in this photo. We will miss her greatly.

PANDORA UPDATE

When we went to the vet on Friday her pressure was down to 46. We increased another one of her meds as instructed and will go back on Tuesday for another check up.

PANDORA - BAD NEWS.....

Just wanted to let you all know that we got bad news on Pandora yesterday. Her left eye (the brown one) swelled and got really hazy on Friday. She has allergies that flare up now and then so we started treating it with eye wash and benadryl as always. Well Friday night it swelled so we took her to the vet. She has glaucoma and they can not get the pressure down. Normal pressure is considered high at 20, her's is 86. She has lost all sight in that eye and we will more than likely have to have it injected so that it stops producing fluids or completely have the eye removed. We are weighing our options currently. If anyone has had a dog with this issue please weigh in.

GEORGE - YOU WILL BE MISSED!!

George was one of those small critters that sometimes come along with rescues from a puppy mill. He came with two other small companions ( a Rat, Buster Brown and a Guinea Pig, Coco Puff). He was Mom's pet for just over 6 months.

We have no idea how old he was, but we all loved George. The only time he ever offered to bite was when he had to have a bath. He was a lovable boy when he was sleepy or was just waking up.

He passed away on April 30th. Mom went down stairs to say "Good morning" to her small critters and found him. So George, Mom will miss you greatly and I will miss you a bit also.

She was known by many people before she came to us as Ch. Sisterwood Platinum Lady Blu. We didn't care what title she held or how many shows she had won. When Ellen was trying to find her a new home we were blessed that Sarah thought of us. She gave us a wonderful opportunity to be Patti Sue's people. After coming to us she went by names such as Patti Cake or Cakes depending on the level of silliness we had at the moment, but also went by P. Cake and Patti Petals. She gave us 4 years of knowing a truly wonderful spirit. She was already gone when we found her after waking up this morning and we pray that she went peacefully and without pain. She always slept in the floor in our room at night so I think we would have known if she was in distress. Please remember her fondly if you had the privilege of meeting her.

The following is something I wrote about Templeton's story, largely things I made up. I hope that he has felt loved and cared for in the last 7 months and 8 days. I know that he wiggled into my heart! He died of complications from upper respiratory problems due to the conditions he was kept in at the hoarder's house he and the other animals were abandon in. I will miss him greatly! I loved you bunches sweet boy!!!!!

Here is his story in my words:::
The story of Templeton the Rat is one that will be told by others of his kind for centuries to come. Templeton’s childhood is quite foggy you see but his imagination had brought it through his mind for him to see.
Templeton’s belief is that his life started out quite grand, with lots of love and tender hands. He knows that things must have been that way because of the joy he wants to give to others. His life did not always remain so grand when once he feel into neglectful hands.
He was left in a small cage barely big enough for him and his ratty tail and always ate food that was extremely stale. He lived in a home but nowhere near alone. There were many dogs and many cats, a rabbit, a guinea pig, and he, the rat.
The family that lived there went away and no one came to check on them day after day. What his name was then he does not recall because it is better at times not to remember at all. After days with no food or no water things started smelling worse than any hog waller.
Some people did come and there were bright flashing lights. Pictures were not something that he had known in his cage all alone. They gave him some food and a nice cool drink and took him to a place that did not stink. There were people looking at him in dismay wondering if he knew how to behave.
He spent the night in the place with water and food with all the other animals from the hoarder’s brewed. There were ones that did not understand and were quite fearful of the human man. They came to know that he was nice along with the others who had saved his life. The man had a wife who pulled him from the cage he could sense her complete outrage. She said to the others “how can people believe this is care?” That night he and the guinea pig went home with her and he moved into a cage with stairs.
The guinea pig was still searching for a home but he told Daffodil that she would not always be alone. He was not used to being the one with a family who cared and living in a cage with stairs. He could climb up and he could climb down, no longer did he only have room to go round and round. There was food of many different types and water for him sip during the night. There was even a house made out of wood where he could store his food and keep it all good.
The man’s wife would take him and let him see what the rest of life was about. She would take him with her to type, he was with her every night, through the day she would take him out to play and hold him close nearly nose to nose. Templeton realized he had found a home like the one he dreamed from his childhood before he was alone. He got treats and lots of different things to try but Cheetos by far make him the happiest little rattie guy. Templeton’s life became so different from the place he was to the place he went. The human’s who rescued him wasted no expense. They all grew to love him even though they were unsure. He now goes to school’s to teach about animal care so that others like him won’t end up in a place like there. There is the place that no animal deserves to go where neglect and abandonment have animals in cages all in a row. There is not always that way sometimes they are free to roam inside a home and left without a care. Here is much better and this is where Templeton’s story ends where he lives with all his friends.

PATTI LOVES CRITTERS!!!

Patti is the keeper of the critters at our house! She comes running (or as close to running as Patti gets) as soon as you take out the Bunny, Rat or Guinea Pig. If we are brushing on of the Piggies and they squeal she nose pokes you as if to say "Hey, what are you doing to my critter?"

She is loving the cool weather. It is times like this that I know she was a more northern temperature dog! She loves it when it snow and gets cold. The colder it gets the more active she gets, which is just the opposite for the rest of our crew!

Happy Birthday and We Miss You!

Today is Patti's 11th Birthday! We are so honored to have her in our lives! Thank you Sarah for making the connection so that we could get her from Ellen. She is such a wonderful girl! Everywhere she goes people fuss over her.

On another note one of the deciding factors is that Patti's birthday was on the same day as when our Beagle, Lady Belle died. Thank you for helping us celebrate them both!!

Who knew that our sweet little Patti was so opinionated?

Our rescue has been doing low cost neuters for cats, but does not have the money to finish our low cost spay/neuter trailer.

The dogs begged their owners to allow them to show their feelings by doing a mini protest! Dakota was very thankful that her Mom let her participate!

Issy was there as well, and would not be outdone by her shorter sibling!

Tut, who was the ringleader, is very open with his beliefs. He has been quoted as saying " Cats need rights as well but dogs deserve equal opportunity!"

Patti was really hopeful that the kind people at the bakery that the protest was held in front of would feel sorry for her and just open the door. She was happy to protest but was relieved to get in out of the heat!

HERE I AM IN TEXAS!

Here I am in Texas once again, but I do wish it was under better conditions. My Aunt Wilma had a rather painful surgery today and they removed about 1/3 of her colon. They are sending the mass out to see if it is cancer. They know from the biopsy that the external cells were precancerous. Please pray for her and her family that everyone makes it through this with faith and grace that God will take care of them all!

FOSTER FRIDAY - SHELTIE GIRLS

This is Lilly! She is Stacy's favorite! I think her petite size reminds him of our Sissy Que. Graycie, Mom's Pitt mix, decided to get a closer look at a not to sure Gypsy.

This little girl has no name as of yet, but I love her full collar!

We have had them about 3 weeks now and Big Girl got adopted the first time she went to adoption!

I love Shetland Sheepdogs! Those of you who know me have heard me talk about Sissy Que I am sure, so when these arrived our rescue director knew immediately whose house they could go to.

Sorry it has been so long between posts. I haven't been real good about those things lately!

NAFA has an Animal Fair twice a year. We have one in May and one the weekend before Halloween, this year in Halloween. I was lucky to get to photograph some of the animals and happenings. We do a just for kicks course with agility type things. Hope you enjoyed these few shots.

PANDORA'S NEW SISTER

Pandora and the rest of our gang would like you to meet Issy a.k.a. Isabella. Issy started out with us as a foster dog off of Freecycle. She was a heartworm positive eighteen month old Great Dane that the family could no longer care for (the wife had gotten a small dog, husband was tore up to be loosing his baby). She came in heat and stayed with us through our long power outage ordeal. Stacy fell in love with her and truth be known so did I. She fits well in our house and the big/medium size girls all play so well together. She is heartworm negative now and is going to stay with us. I am insane to have five dogs and don't know that we will still be able to foster. I will say though that she is a pure joy. The only thing she has work to do on is not swallowing the small critters that live in our home. I can't wait for everyone to meet her.

PATTI'S DENTAL

Patti went to the vet on Friday and came back with 9 less teeth! I knew that she might lose two of her front ones, but I had no clue that she had that many bad ones. We keep check on that and brush teeth, but goodness did that sneak up on us. She is doing well though and will get to eat tonight. She does have to have it with water though so that it is a bit softer for her to chew. I really don't think that she understood when I told her they don't make doggie dentures!!!

While I know some of you are completely sick of snow and winter weather, I am just jumping for joy!!! We are actually getting snow and quite a bit of it for our area!!! I hope to take some pictures of our kids playing in it tomorrow to post!

We were at the rescue we volunteer for all day today between doing our $5.00 cat neuter program and pet adoption our day was totally shot. By the time we got home tonight it was dark outside and the electric company has not been back out to hook up our security light in our backyard.

I hope to have some pictures and get them posted tomorrow! Hope you are all having a great night!

POWER, POWER, WHAT A JOY!

Well we have power as of 8 p.m. last night. We are waiting to see if we have any water leaks from not having heat to keep the pipes from frezzing. We should be able to move back home by Saturday. We may have to wait as we have alot that needs to get done with NAFA this weekend, so we will just have to see.
I am ready to get back in our own home with our things though. I just don't know if we can get eveything done in the amount of time we are going to have.

STILL NO POWER!!!!

Well we still have no power. Our pole is still lying on the ground and it looks like it will be a while longer. We are staying in my Mom's old trailer that Tammy's Aunt used to stay in. It doesn't have running water, but does have lights and heat and a fenced in yard (huge plus there). Just wanted to update everyone.

Well not actually anymore, but it was for a while. The ice has finally melted but we are still without electricity. They are sating any where from 2 more weeks to a month till it will be on again. I am at Angie's house doing laundry and trying to catch up on emails so I thought I would post a few pictures of what it was like. We are supposed to get snow this week and temps back down in the teens. No electric = no heat, so we are stay with my Aunt, who also has no electricity but does have heat.

SEBASTIAN

Just to let you all know that on Thursday Sebastian was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma of the Spleen. There was no good news that followed his diagnosis. Just about everything that have I researched about it and what our veterinarian told was not hopeful. We are going to try a few holistic things to see if they help to at the least keep him comfortable. With this disease he can develop a bleed without warning and since his is all internal there will be little sign of what is happening.
He is a very aggressive eater and loves certain things. He refused a slice of apple and it concerned me. Stacy brought home bananas, which are his favorite, and he would not even smell them. Later that night when they all got their kibble he was the last to finish, he is normally done first and staring at the girls to try and get them to leave their bowls. Needless to say I called the veterinarian first thing the next morning. We did blood work and x-rays. It was not long till we knew for sure what the problem was.
Please pray that the holistic treatment works to the best of it's ability as the other options have far greater risk.

While we enjoyed our time away greatly it is always great to get back home! We loved our visit with Tony and Laura and their family, and with Sarah and part of her crew. We hope to not take so long between visits next time. It was great for them to get to see Patti also since Sarah is the reason we have her and Laura went with us to get her.

Well off to get so rest and I will try and post some of the pictures tomorrow. I will have to go through all the pictures I took first though ( I only took 1300 pictures). Only half of the turned out very well, but it gave me an opportunity to play with my new camera.

Here we are having a wonderful visit with friends! If you ever get a chance you should all come see Laura & Tony. The housing is great and lets just say that the meals are better than any restaurant!! The puppies are all settled in bed and we hope to get a visit from Sarah on either Saturday or Sunday!
I am sure that Delilah and Sebastian are having a great time with their Grandpa, who is the greatest pet sitter I know! We hope that you are all having a wonderful holiday season so far!

CHRISTMAS TIME CLOCK

It seems there is just not enough time at Christmas to get all the things done that need to be tended to. It is like there is a different clock that comes into your life at Christmas and the hands move twice as fast as normal. Life seems to pick up and try to adapt to the speed, but somehow it can never catch up. I love the season, just wish we could slow down and enjoy it.

We also have a lot going on with NAFA at this time of year. It actually helps my Christmas spirit because what better to do then help an animal live a better life. We are currently working with another rescue to provide homes for 30 something puppy mill dogs. We love to watch as they turn from fearing everything to knowing what a warm bed, treats, fresh food and water, and especially toys are. The first toy grab is the best feeling or the first time they come to see you instead of you having to find them.

The moments that we all cherish most vary from person to person, but we all have something that makes the meaning of our holiday. This next year I have decided to try and live my life everyday as I do around Christmas. I will walk with a little lighter step, smile at a few more strangers, make time to visit family, but most importantly remember that good is out there at every turn you just have to look harder for it.

We hope that you and all of your families have a wonderful holiday season and that you go home with a peace that will last for months on end. Take that little extra time to do something kind you may not see the rewards instantly, but you will feel them as time goes on.

ICE, ICE, EVERYWHERE ICE!!!!

Well I would say it looks pretty outside, but it is ice! If you just glance it looks like snow it is so heavy. It started sleeting here around 1 p.m. on Monday and it is still falling. I went to work @ 3:30 p.m., but I choose to leave about 6:30 p.m. from work. I did not want to try and drive home @ midnight. I will get out tomorrow and take pictures in the daylight. The ice was so thick on my truck windshield that I could not get it to come off with my ice scraper in the 3 hours it had sat there. I know that for the people from farther north this is pretty routine, but for us southern people it is far from it. I wanted snow, it could have kept the ice!!!!!!

I hate it for my Mom, but one of her furkids has been in the hospital since last Saturday. They finally decided it was advanced liver cancer. He took a turn for the worse this morning and Mom had to let him go. He was not able to even walk. Just wanted to share his beautiful face with you all. He was adopted about 9 years ago from the Humane Society of Northeast Arkansas. His name was Simon.....................

Cassie was a case where the owner just didn't have time for a dog. She became destructive in the home where she lived because they were rarely home. They also did not like that Corgis shed soooooooo much. She fostered with us for about a month before she was adopted. She is a great little girl and was not yet a year old.

This is Dobie. He was a Rat Terrier / Jack Russel mix. He was fostering with us when we had the Scottish Terrier puppies last Christmas - Feb. He is such a bright boy and was a typical Terrier. We called him Dobie Dobster.

Well work called yesterday and I get to go in to work on the day shift Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. Good news for pay and insurance. I am glad that I get to fill in for people. The only bummer about it is that most the time it is around the holidays when you want to be off that you get called in. Oh well when you are laid off your can't really be picky. I hope that everyone is having a good week. We are just working on things at home and going to dog class here in a little while. Well the unemployment numbers just keep growing and I will be one of the many in them. I will get to fill in for people who are on vacation in the sections that I am trained in, or if someone is on sick leave. I hope to get a lot done around the house though. I hope that few of you face this fate. I am looking for jobs, who knows maybe the perfect thing for me is just around the corner.

This is Kelly. She is a Shepherd mix. She stayed with us about 6 weeks. Her and Delilah loved to play together. She was a very happy girl that loved to cuddle. She was adopted by a very loving couple and is happier than I could have ever made her. She is an only dog and loves it!!!

Daisy is a very loving Great Dane that if we had not had a full house already would have stayed. She went to a great adoptive home and lives with a mantle Great Dane named Sophie. The two girls bonded very quickly and you rarely see one with out the other. She was a pleasure to foster.

This is Colette and Dozer. They are 2 of the 10 week old Rat Terrier mixes that we were fostering. They are both very playful and spunky. The rest of the babies have already found homes. I will have to admit that although I do not typically like small dogs, Colette has really wiggled into my heart!

These are a few of the Rat Terrier mix puppies we are currently fostering at our home. Their are 7 of them and their mother is Holly. They are exactly what Rat Terrier's are meant to be. They have boundless energy, eat like crazy, and play constantly. They are going to Petco Saturday for adoption. We hope that some of them find their homes this week. They are quite the lot to handle with there being so many of them. Sorry I was a little late posting this one.

Showcase of the Dogs Weekend

Most of you know that although I do not show dogs myself I enjoy watching others do so. I am sure it will be of no surprise to any of you that although the group of people that we were going with this weekend were not planning to leave J-town until 11 a.m., we left home @ 6:45 a.m. for the show. I wanted to see some of the dogs show before walking around to look at the other events.

While Christi was not there this year, we still came home with treats for the kids. They stayed at home with Grandpa and I firmly believe we would not have gotten more than a sniff if we had come home empty handed. They know that every time we go on a trip without them they are sure to get something upon our return. The weather was beautiful for the show and quite picturesque.

After we left Showcase we went to out hotel to check in. We were driving toward it and I had a little bit of the country bumpkin in me rear it's head. We were driving down the road towards the Hilton and the only thing I could think was....

that it looked like a really pretty GRAIN SILO!!!! Oh come on now you all know you see it too!!

The Adoption Options Seminar was very good, but I sure got tired of sitting. We left there about 5 p.m., and drove home. Hope everyone else had a great weekend!

We are going to Memphis this weekend for Showcase of the Dogs on Saturday (www.showcaseofthedogs.com) and for an Adoption Options Seminar (http://www.petfinder.com/adoptionoptions/index.cgi) on Sunday. Christi from www.thecaninecafe.com will be at the show. The kids don't really mind us going because they know that they normally get something when we come back home. This is Holly Holstein. She is a Rat Terrier mix. She came to us as a very pregnant girl. She got to our house on Wednesday afternoon and had her puppies while we were at pet adoption on Saturday. She had seven puppies. They will be 9 weeks old on Saturday. She has been away from them letting her milk dry up so that she can find a new home as well. We still have the puppies at our house. We will more than likely post about them next week. She and her puppies will be available for adoption next Saturday, October 18th @ Petco in Jonesboro.

When I worked 3rd shift I had a wonderful boss by the name of Marcus. He passed away suddenly on October 7th. He will be missed by most of his workers. He was a great boss that you could tell anything. He had just retired about 6 months ago and now he is gone. Just wanted to say a little about him.

We have quite a gathering of animals. We have four dogs- Patti, Sebastian, Delilah, and Pandora. We have a cat - Tippin. We have four Guinea Pigs- Petunia, Daisy, Curly Joe, and Barney Bedhead. We have a White's Tree Frog- Prince Charming, and a Corn Snake- Cinderella. I will be posting about each of them sooner or later, but thought I would get introductions out of the way.

Delilah and I went to St. Mark's this morning for The Blessing of the Animals. This is the first year that Delilah has gone. This is my third year. It is always a very moving thing to see all the animals gathered in church on their best behavior. If you have never been it is something that you should think about going to at least once. The picture is not the best, but at least you can see that Delilah is at church.

This is our first entry so we are just figuring things out. Hope you enjoy this little bit of our lives.
